RECYCLING WASTE TO CREATE ART
Trash Fashion from recycled waste

“Metamorphosis of Waste” is a workshop to demonstrate the conversion of the now ubiquitously used Tetra paks into paper. This transformation or up-cycling of a discarded product into a brand new one that now serves a completely different purpose is intended to motivate the children to recycle goods. (ex. Tetrapak cartons used as containers for storing milk or liquids are converted to reinforced roof tiles).

By converting trash and giving it yet another life we do our bit to reduce waste. The concept of recycling will be reinforced through a humorous street play in Hindi enacted by the team members; educating the young minds through entertaining methods. The participants will also be given the opportunity to use their creativity in converting trash into fashionable garments and accessories and then walk the ramp for fun! We hope this will encourage the children to re-use creatively and enjoy the process.

NATURAL DYES

We are surrounded by “colour” that makes life so wonderful. Life without colour is unimaginable! Our workshop on Natural Dyes will get the participants to question and discover the organic sources of colour and its usage. The session aims at drawing the participants’ attention to the presence of colour in food, on fabric and on paper. An expert faculty on painting with natural dyes on paper will demonstrate this painting technique. Creating images and painting with natural dyes extracted from beetroots, and flowers like copperpod and parijaat, will open a new world for our youngsters who may only be aware of synthetic colours packaged in plastic tubes and jars!

SHAKESPEARE’S GARDEN
Shakespeare Themed Garden

Today, most children studying English in higher grades are familiar with Shakespeare’s writings such as “As you like it”, “Merchant of Venice” and “Tempest” which forms part of their curriculum. A   “Shakespeare’s Garden” is a themed garden that cultivates plants mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare. There exist twenty-seven or more such known gardens, nurtured lovingly, in different parts of the world. This workshop will combine literature and gardening by bringing alive the flora mentioned in the works of Shakespeare. Participants will be guided in designing their own Shakespearian gardens on paper and maybe even identify some of them in real life. Closer home the concept of linking literature and gardening will be reinforced through the beautiful poetry on Indian flowers by our own beloved Poet Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

ORGANIC COMPOSTING IN POTS , PLANTING A KITCHEN GARDEN CREATING NUTRIENT RICH SOIL (AMRUT MITTI)

The magic pot of composting!
The young participants attending the workshop will learn the art of composting, making “Amrut Mitti” sowing seeds and techniques of setting up urban kitchen gardens. This will make them realize that food and waste are components of the same continuum. These natueco gardens which will eventually become the source of their food shall show the undeniable connection between food and waste. The participants will engage in a hands-on session of gardening and composting activities during the camp. At the end of the session each one will carry home composting pots, a tub full of “Amrut Mitti” and a tub of seeds sown in “Amrut Mitti” thereby starting their own kitchen gardens!

HARVESTING AND PREPARING AN ORGANIC MEAL

As a finale to this 6 day workshop, participants will harvest fruits and vegetables from the organic farm at the Maharashtra Nature Park. Our instructor, a cooking and gardening enthusiast and expert on healthy cooking will demonstrate techniques and recipes to create fresh sumptuous organic snacks from the harvest. In the process of creating food from one’s own garden the youngsters will reflect on questions relating to food and eating habits. Where does their food come from? Who produces it and how? What does the food contain? How far does it travel before reaching the consumer? Through these questions and explorations they will learn about the current food production paradigm, food miles, pesticide contamination, the threat of GM foods, additives in food, processed foods and unhealthy eating and so on. We hope this workshop will encourage the participants to think about healthy food habits.

____________________________________________________________________
The overall idea that drives the workshop is to expose young minds to the concept that everything ultimately comes from nature and should go back to nature. Food waste art, gardening are all part of the same cycle and our biggest achievement is to use nature’s gifts without causing harm to oneself and the planet. Therefore eat what you grow, recycle your waste and use naturally available sources to create art as this is what constitutes sustainable and healthy living. These are not utopian or unrealized ideas but rather they are do-able concepts which make our lives fun and artistic and help us enjoy scrumptious healthy meals.

Update on "Garden by the Bay" Winter Harvest

As promised we are back with update on Purvita's garden.
In Purvita's words.....

"A whole lot of reviews on my terrace garden last time made me nervous.... I wondered, how I would ever manage to keep up to the expectations.
Well after a big pause, I told myself, “what the heck, let me update the readers, forget what is expected!"
This is what I have done and would like to share.
Here are the pictures which are self explanatory, enjoy!"

More later... feel free to comment and most welcome to visit my terrace. Have made more of Amrut Mitti in containers and doubled the space with plantation. Wish to land a helping hand....??? pl contact.

Promise to reward you with a sapling in return.

Currently have sowed seeds of tomatoes, chillies, capsicums, variety of brinjals, bindi etc.... hoping the summer will be as good as ever, for us to have a bounty crop this season too.

Cheers and smile,
Purvita Kapadia

An Update on our activities - Vipul Sanghvi's "Kasturi Vatika"

Dear Friends

The National Seminar gave us an opportunity to learn interact and grow!
And grow we did!

For last two years we have been making Amrut Mitti.....And so have our volunteers in their own terrace and balcony sills. This year our focus is mainly on making our community gardens flourish and our fresh ventures on terrace gardens productive.

We bring you some precious moments of collective effort which is the hallmark of Urban Leaves Team.
For those who have not read about Vipuls terrace earlier... click on the link below and then follow the thread.

Vipul Sanghvi's garden.

Vipul has been one of the most regular Volunteers at the Urban Leaves- Maharashtra Nature Park Community Farm. He observed, worked hard, took initiative and gave us lots of support in our activities.
He simultaneously worked on his own terrace garden.

Well you have already read the beginning of his venture ( link above) With loads of Amrut Mitti made, it was now time to design and create Vipul's farm! So what better opportunity could we ask for to practice what we had learnt on permaculture techniques recently learnt from Clea at the National Seminar!

Urban Leaves volunteers got together one bright
Sunday, in Vipuls vatilka and  discussed, drew plans and designs and : D .......

Put their thinking caps on!
really engrossed in  the exercise!
group discussions and suggestions!
Samprati, the artist among us put on
paper what we had imagined in our heads!
Then began the task of laying out the beds as per the design.
Measured the width of beds- to be easily reached from all sides.
Filled up beds with Amrut Mitti!
Planted a few saplings in drums and beds.

Whoa! After a month photos of the same garden!
1st batch of vegetables, herbs

Have focused on bio diversity! Increasing edges and curves!

A coconut in the corner! Watch it after two years or so!

                                                                           Caulis.....
                                                                 Beet, radish, tomatoes.....
                                                                             spinach

                                                                              banana
                                                                             tomatoes!

I am sure you will all wish to have your own,  "KASTURI GARDEN" one day!

Rather than having rows of beds or number of containers with mono crops, our focus while designing was on bio diversity and multi cropping, using every inch of space, planting in three tiers ( the tall trees, followed by shrubs and ground cover crops) ! Designing a sustainable food forest on a terrace :D in a mega city Mumbai!

Keep a tab... and watch out for more stories!

The next garden we focus on is of Purvita Kapadia, who has been tirelessly working on her own terrace and in our Community Farm at Nana Nani Pak, Chowpatty!

Love and happy gardening

Preeti and
